OK, this one hurts. Upon my return to the USA after nearly a decade abroad, one of the earliest shows I went to was to see Australia’s Nerfherder play at a tiny little shop in Philadelphia. Opening was Cheap City, which blew my mind with their avant-garde style and abruptive, but enjoyable music. Since then I’ve been fan of the band, and guiding force Clover Nahabedian (who spent a while contributing to TGEFM).
Well, it appears Cheap City is wrapping up business, and will be releasing their final LP, Cheap City Forever, on 16 May 2025. Sad times, indeed. But while they still have time, they’ll still excite our earholes.
With that in mind, they’ve delivered the first single of the album, “Raised by Rats,” as a music video. Hold onto your hats because this one is a frenetic ride. It’s a lyric video but, if you’re musically literate, there are also notes… (did I say that right?).
See the video below, and visit their Bandcamp to preorder the album on CD, digital download, or vinyl. You can also hear them at their Spotify.

the white drew carey (aka – Jeff Sorley) is the founder and head editor of TGEFM. He’s lived (outside of) Chicago, Madison WI, (ugh) Penn State, Lyon FR, Oxford UK, central New Jersey, the SF/Bay Area, and now the Twin Cities. When not scouring the web for more great bands and labels to post about, he also spends time drawing (mostly) silly sci-fi and anime stuff under the name Asplenia Studios.
