EP review: Clearly Confused – “Near Mint”

Self Release – 06 Dec 2024

No frills pop punk.

The debut EP from the new Dutch trio Clearly Confused is self-described as “a perfect fit for people that like 80s hits and lean into 90s pop punk nostalgia.” From first listen, their description is spot on. They have a stripped-down garage band feel. Simple, straightforward, and relatable lyrics fill every song. Catchy choruses and short guitar solos are found thruoughout this EP. Their signature sound contains minimal vocal dynamics as well as lots of palm muting chords throughout the tunes.

Opening track “In my Mind” is a catchy tune with apt lyrics about being stuck in your own head. We’ve all had a relationship that we know is bad for us and we just can’t let go and “Stay Away” encapsulates that struggle perfectly. “Is it Because?” is fitting to anyone who acts out entire conversations in their head. The lyrics contain the same questions asked over and over, and being the classic overthinker that I am, can relate to this wholly. Continuing with this theme “(Maybe) This is Fine” is relevant to those that don’t favor feeling their feelings while answering “nothing” when are partner asks us what’s wrong. Wrapping it up is “Better than This” which after the earlier songs filled with questions and uncertainty, offers a solution to just accept things as they are.

The production could use a little polishing but overall, a solid effort. Looking forward to hearing more from Clearly Confused.
