First Impressions Review: Bad Secret – “Matter of Tyme”

Self-released, 14 Apr 2023

I love Demo-ONE was a contender for album of the year for me in 2020, one of my most listened to albums in recent years.  Vinyl-ONE was an incredible 4-song follow-up that was as cool as the first.  And in between, the band dropped “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’”, a cover of a Billy Joel song that worked well against all odds.  Now, for the first time since 2021, Bad Secret has delivered a new song.

“Matter of Tyme” is a cover of a song by FITNESS, a band I’ve never heard nor heard of.  Prior to listening to this new single, I did my homework, going back and listening to the original.  It’s a gentle song with strummed guitars, some semi-atmospheric effects on the melodic vocals, and an all-around spare arrangement.  Bad Secret’s take opens much the same way, but when the music kicks in after a few soft strums, the guitars buzz with a certain electricity, the bass keeps pace, and the drums bash away in a steady rhythm.  It’s a much more energetic stomp, but Beau’s vocal take keeps the melody just right (not surprising as his vocals are always fantastic).  I’m absolutely loving this song on first listen and will be coming back with frequency.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
