First Impressions Review: Bad Secret / Zoanoids – “The Prisons At Dun Fee Aran” / “Elvira”

Hey Pizza! Records, 27 Jun 2023

A couple days back we shared some exciting news about an upcoming split coming from Hey Pizza! Records.  The split features the punk juggernauts Bad Secret and Zoanoids and will feature 2 new songs from each band.  That one stands to arrive 01 Jul 2023 with both digital and physical pre-orders up at the links below.

To get things going, each band has early-released a song from the split, and, being a huge fan of both bands, I’m gonna review both right here (and probably write-up a review of the other couple songs once they drop Friday).  Bad Secret’s offering is “The Prisons At Dun Fee Aran”. The song features bright great guitars that buzz and sound dense and the song goes along at a steady mid-tempo.  A lead guitar seemingly shifts to dueling lead guitars that are positively fantastic during the bridge and then come back as the song moves towards a close.  And, as with all my favorite Bad Secret songs, the real treat comes from the vocal melodies.  They are surprising and revealing and nothing-but-memorable.  “Elvira” from Zoanoids is powerful, with guitars that sound full and destructive playing their catchy chord changes and shifting between full open chords and muted chugs and the drums are thunderously pulverizing at a relentless pace.  And again, Zoanoids bring melodies that are memorable.  Simply, if you’ve listened to either (or both) bands in the past and liked what you heard, you’ll surely love this.  And if you’ve never given either a chance before, these 2 songs are a great jump-in.  Yes, please.

  • Favorite Song: uh, no – both are terrific and I refuse to choose
  • Song Comes From: Split
  • Album Release Date: 01 Jul 2023
  • Purchase/Pre-Order/Pre-Save: Bandcamp / Hey Pizza!

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
