BIG TIME (all caps!) are a new band of 30-somethings from Montpellier, France. This, their first demo release, arrived just a couple days ago and finds the band tackling 3 songs (with all caps song titles!). You can pick up a digital copy of the demo name-your-price over at Bandcamp (check out the link below).
The 3 songs that make up the S/T demo have a real noticeable energy. Opener “I’M OKAY” plays at a skatepunk pace with shouted hoarse vocals that kinda hook me with the cadences and the slow-downs provide some dynamic shifts. “THANKS FOR NOTHING” opens with a terrific guitar lead and the song structure really plays well – the stop-and-go shifts, slow downs, and drop-outs are very effective and well-executed. Closer “MISS MY 20’s” leans a little more into vocal melodies with some back-and-forth between the cleaner vocals and some deranged screams and the bass takeover on the bridge works okay. Overall, I found this pretty solid for an initial release – good musicianship, okay songwriting, and pretty well recorded. My only real knock would be that the songs sometimes go on a bit for my attention span – two of them go past 3 minutes and the other makes it past 4. All that said, BIG TIME sort of reminds me of a rough-and-tumble version of Japanese greats Hi-Standard for some reason, so if you like stuff like that, you might wanna check this out.
- Favorite Song: probably “THANKS FOR NOTHING”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
