First Impressions Review: California Cheeseburger – “Toxic Wasteman”

29 Feb 2024

Granted, I am only a recent transplant to the great communist state of California, but I have no idea what a “California Cheeseburger” is. So when a message came into our inbox from a band from (adjusts glasses) Surrey, England named California Cheeseburger, that definitely piqued my interest. I spent a hair over five years in the UK and, damn… does that place produce some great punk bands, so I am always willing to dip my toes, if you will.

California Cheeseburger are no exception and, on leap day, they released “”Toxic Wasteman,” their first single of the year and their newest since last June’s What’s on the TV EP.

“Toxic Wasteman” doesn’t try to be or do anything ground-breaking, and that’s a good thing. It’s a high tempo punk banger with some peppy guitar licks and, one of my faves, nice solid bass tones. It’s one of those songs that’s… not dumb… but dumb fun and you can’t help but starting grinning about thirty seconds in. It’s a smile you’re gonna keep on your face for the whole of the song’s sub-two minute run-time. Highly recommend.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
