First Impressions Review: Cherry Cheeks – “Hard Stancing”

Total Punk Records – 06 Aug 2023

Weirdo lofi punks Cherry Cheeks have announced a new album on the way.  CCLPII arrives 01 Oct 2023 via Total Punk Records and can be pre-ordered at the Bandcamp link below.  The album follows up 2022’s Cherry Radio EP.  Along with the announcement comes the lead single.

“Hard Stancing” is pretty much lofi punk perfection.  There’s fairly clean guitars playing some memorable riffs.  There’s a ridiculous brainwashing synth line that pops up a couple of times.  The simple drums keep time just right (and sound like the work of a drum machine).  And there’s even handclaps to add to the popping goodness!  The vocals are the catchiest shit, though (and more than anything else, the reason for my lofi designation above).  Sounding shouted through a telephone or shitty mic of some sort, they bring the energy, the hooks, and the fun.  And fun is the right description for this song.  I really love it and think fans of bands like Coneheads and Goblin Daycare will love it, too.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
