Jike Mudge Records – 29 Jul 2023
Clown College Graduates have a new EP available via Arizona’s Jike Mudge Records. The 6-song release is called C.C.G. and is available name-your-price at the Bandcamp link down below. With song titles like “Michael Jordan”, “Salt Lake Bogeyman”, and “Big Orgy Premarital”, and a no-shit mutant cover of “Bad To The Bone”, you’ve gotta be curious. So here’s the deal.
The music is a lofi noisy synth/effects/drums/guitar (maybe?) freakout throughout. Don’t plan on making out many words along the way – they’re distorted and sometimes reverbed and echoed into oblivion. And even calling all 6 “songs” songs is a stretch. Some have discernible song structures (the opener “Michael Jordan”, “Bad To The Bone”, and “Skylanders”, sorta). Another, “Salt Lake Bogeyman” is more of a noise blast sketch possibly aimed at trying one’s patience. The closer, “Big Orgy Premarital”, has a touch of guitar and what sounds like a sorta inside joke for nearly 40 seconds. And then there’s “drumbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb”, 2 seconds (yes, 2 seconds) of a drum beat. But here’s the thing with C.C.G.: it’s uninhibited and fun. It sounds like a couple friends set up a mic in the middle of a room and recorded themselves messing around on an otherwise boring day for their own entertainment. And that, I get. That, I like. That, I do. Not for the faint of heart, but I think I’m gonna be back listening to this one again.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
