First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

The cleverly named Dad Brains are back with a new single called “Back To School”. For those new to the band, Dad Brains is made up of former members of a handful of punk bands, now singing songs about being a parent. “Back To School” appears to be the first new music from the band since 2019’s Pirates Press EP Dadditude. You can check out old stuff from the band over at Bandcamp.
“Back To School” is in the fun spirit of Dad Brains other stuff. It’s got a certain aggressiveness to it in the serrated and chugging guitars and the pounding mid-tempo stomp that is unrelenting, and the vocals are delivered with an almost-aggressive anger. But here’s the kicker: as with other stuff from the band, the words those vocals bark are parental and endearing and humorous. Lines include “I love spending time with my mini me”, “I hope your teachers are nice and I wish you well”, and “and when I drop you off I’m gonna miss you like hell”. This is fun stuff that’ll connect with people like me (dads), but it’s a good enough time to maybe be enjoyed by people that aren’t (not dads).
- Song Comes From: appears to be standalone single
