First Impressions Review: Dave Strong – “One Good Reason”

Laptop Punk Records, 05 Jun 2023

Dave Strong has had quite a fun run of singles over the past couple of years.  Ranging from Ramones-inspired pop punk songs to rockabilly numbers to a cover of The Vaselines “Molly’s Lips”.  No matter what he’s taking on, he typically ends up creating something buzzing and memorable.

Now, Strong has dropped a new single that features Lenny Lashley (of Darkbuster, Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys, Lenny Lashley’s Gang Of One, and Street Dogs) playing some guitar.  The song is called “One Good Reason” and it hedges strongly towards his countrified-rockabilly side.  Shuffling and quick-paced drums, some guitar picking and bending notes, a melodic bass pluck, and some fiery guitar leads take care of the music while Dave rips through some quick-phrasing turns of word going on about things not being right at home – arguments, piles of dishes, kids hating school – and it’s all sung melodically and memorably.  The song is a catchy and fun number.  Check it out.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
