First Impressions Review: Deep Wimp – “Too Much”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Self-released, 20 Jan 2023

Brooklyn’s Deep Wimp have a new song out called “Too Much”.  By Bandcamp’s count, it’s the fourth release from the band and their first since Aug 2022’s “Plume” single.  I’ve not heard the band before, but something about the name had me thinking I should give a listen.

“Too Much” has a sneakily-addictive guitar line that snakes into my brain.  The basic chords are okay, but there’s a lead line that sticks.  The guitar tone is something worth mentioning too, fuzzy and cutting and pretty fitting for all that’s going on here.  The rest of the song bounces along at a mid-tempo pace. The lead vocals are raw and alternatingly ragged and full-throated, and shout-sung, but surprisingly effective at conveying some real feeling.  There’s nothing terribly new at play here, but the song is pretty good and benefits from the unpolished production.  It reminds me (in a good way) of some of the midwest pop-punk/emo crossover stuff that was happening in the late 90s / early 2000’s.  Worth a listen if that’s your thing.
