First Impressions Review: Diesel Boy – “Bismarck”

SBÄM Records, 09 May 2023

Diesel Boy have announced their return with a new full-length called Gets Old.  That one arrives 28 Jul 2023 from SBÄM Records and will be their first new album since the 2001 Honest Don’s release Rode Hard And Put Away Wet.  Pre-orders are up now at the link below (choose either US, Europe, or Canada from the main page and then pre-order on that next page).

Along with the announcement comes a lead single called “Bismarck”, which features Kim Warnock of The Fastbacks.  Having largely missed Diesel Boy during their first run (I think I only ever heard the song on the Survival of the Fattest comp), anything new is coming without much in expectations and the intro lead guitar quickly gets my attention.  “Bismarck” is a mid-tempo pop punk song, with some chugging guitars and slightly gravelly vocals.  The song has an a-okay structure with some double-tap drum parts, bottom-falls-out slow-downs, and shuttered-camera stutters at various points – all helping to keep my notoriously limited attention.  And the vocal melody sticks around in my head just right, especially the hook on the chorus.  It’s a cool punk-meets-alt type of song and I’m thinking fans of the band’s old stuff will take well to this.  Check it out below.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
