I’m not the world’s biggest hardcore fan, but certain bands tend to get my attention through sheer exhilaration and energy. Santa Cruz’s DRAIN are one of those bands. I really liked their last album California Cursed and have enjoyed the pre-release singles for the upcoming Living Proof, due out 05 May 2023 from Epitaph.
The newest pre-release single happens to be a cover of the song “Good Good Things”, one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands (Descendents). The song is a played-straight cover, no major shifts or stylistic changes, and nothing that reveals something deeper amongst the din. But that’s a-okay. The song is a fantastic one and DRAIN plays it with a palpable energy and keeps all the killer melody intact. Following on the heels of “FTS (KYS)”, “Evil Finds Light”, and “Watch You Burn”, “Good Good Things” just ups my enthusiasm for the new one. Check it out.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
