First Impressions Review: Dyatlov – “Rubble”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

I know nothing of Dyatlov, having not heard of them nor their label.  But I’ve been liking gross weird punk a lot lately, and this one grabbed my attention for some reason.  When I first saw a post about this band (I can’t remember where), I made a note to go back to check it out later.  And when I did, I saw that not only do they have a new album on the way, but also a pre-release single.

“Rubble” is a throbbing industrial punk song, relishing in noisy disruptive synths and shouted vocals that rant like Mark E. Smith.  The closest thing to a melody comes from a synth line that joins the fray during instrumental sections between the vocal deliveries.  All sorts of out-of-nowhere sounds join the pulse, swirling hypnotically and obliterating my brain.  This makes me think a lot of Suicide’s first album – a great compliment from me as I love that album when I’m in the right headspace.  Check it out if you’re looking for agitation, buzzing throbs and pulses, and chaotic dystopian sounds.
