First Impressions Review: El Sancho – “Doggie Man Boy Man”

Self-released, 18 May 2023

I’ve listened to some El Sancho in the past, but it’s always been in passing.  I wouldn’t say I’ve ever listened with significant intent or focus, but they’ve always just hung on my radar.  Now the band has announced a new album called Heads Up!.  That one arrives mid-June and the announcement comes with a lead single.

“Doggie Man Boy Man” gets my attention real quick.  It’s some shambolic pop punk with Ramones-style chord progressions, simple straight-forward drums, and a smattering of lead guitar moments that accent the foundations just right.  The vocals are really melodic with some good backing vocals to boot.  At times, the lead singer makes me think I’m listening to Todd Paglialong from Apocalypse Hoboken fronting a sorta Ramonescore-pop-punk band (check out the way he sings “I’ll never leave your side”).  Whatever, it all works real well and truly sticks in my brain after just a listen.  This one has my ears perked and I think I’m gonna end up checking this whole album out with some actual focus when it sees the light of day.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
