First Impressions Review: Evening Shadows – “Beach Queen”

Eccentric Pop Records, 21 Jun 2023

A couple years back, Evening Shadows were a surprise discovery for me.  Their self-titled debut album was loaded with earworm phrasings, great guitar parts, and a catchiness that has not been quick to leave me.  A touch of Ramones, maybe a bit of Jawbreaker and possibly even a drop or two from The Replacements, the album ended up being a favorite.  Now, the band has a new song.

“Beach Queen” is the first new stuff since the 2021 self-titled album, and frankly, it’s great.  Opening guitars remind me of “Paper Lanterns”-era Green Day, shifting between bright open chords and muted chugs, and the drums bash away at a mid-tempo bounce with little stop-and-go rhythmic hooks.  And the lead vocals sing melodies that are absolutely infectious on both the verses and the choruses.  Killer lines like “underneath the boardwalk nights, blacked out from all the neon lights” and “think about the lies that you’ve been told, lie about the things that you still hold” resonate throughout.  Toss on some great “whoa-oh-oh’s” and you have a great pop song readymade for summer.  Check it out and get it on your summer playlist.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
