First Impressions Review: FIDLAR – “Sand On The Beach”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Self-released, 14 Oct 2022

And here’s a new one from FIDLAR.  After “FSU”, I feel like I’m going in blind.  The raucous garage punk band hit right on the one album I heard, and then the dino-stomp Jesus Lizard-sounding band on “FSU” landed just as well.  So how does the soap opera-esque titled “Sand On The Beach” (see the video below) stack up?

Well, this one goes back to a garage-pop-punk sound.  The double-tap drums pop from the speakers and the ramshackle guitars and throbbing bass worm into my brain just right.  The best part, though, are the indelible vocal hooks.  The melodies are terrific and the strained vocals are pretty imperfectly good.  Toss in a couple of slowed-down timeshifts, brief acoustic interludes, and ridiculous lines like “I think we should get tropical” and you’ve got something I’ll be coming back to.
