First Impressions Review: Glittering Insects – “Calcified Time”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Mind Meld Records / Total Punk Records, 03 Feb 2023

These Glittering Insects people seem to have an interesting pedigree.  Featuring members of GG King, Carbonas, and others, the band has announced a self-titled debut album arriving via Total Punk Records.  The release arrives 07 Apr 2023 and features 15 songs.  Ahead of the release, the band has offered up the lead single “Calcified Time”.

A bit different from the parent bands, Glittering Insects are said to revel in some mix of krautrock, shoegaze, black metal, and death rock.  “Calcified Time” can certainly live up to that description.  Opening with a simple and destroyed chainsaw guitar riff and monotone vocals reciting a cult-like mantra, the song has an evil ambience to it.  When the full band sound comes in, the vocals shift up and a touch more melody sneaks in.  I think I even hear a few chimes through the dense wall-of-sound din.  This is nasty chaos and scrambles my brain a bit, but in a good way.  I do hear black metal in the raw guitars, and there’s a certain call to death rock in the vocals and mood (this song has a similar feel to the recent album by Nag).  I’m a little less sure on the shoegaze and krautrock associations, though the dense guitar thicket and reverb maybe check the first box and the repetitive figures and persistent propulsion maybe checks the latter.  Whatever you want to call it, the song is certainly an interesting one that I’ll be coming back to.
