First Impressions Review: Grim Deeds – “I Wonder Why”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Self-released, 12 Dec 2022

California's prolific pop punk maestro continues to churn out new songs.   This newest one is “” is another galloping number that follows the recently released (same day, even) The Archives Vol. 2 and late November's Down In Flames

The song is right in Deeds' wheelhouse.  Chainsaw guitars play a memorable riff and the sing-song vocal melody is a definite earworm.  The bass keeps pace and the drums are charmingly straight-forward and propulsive throughout.  As with so much of Deeds' stuff, the song is elevated by the smart and thoughtful lyrics and rhymes.  Lines like “and now I wonder why I'm not part of the solution, for this toxic institution, to fade far from memory” and rhymes ranging from simple (“sucks” and “fucks”) to smart (“delusion”, confusion”, “resolution”, “illusion”) keep it engaging and interesting throughout.  Songs that make you think can be pretty cool.
