First Impressions Review: Grim Deeds / Noodle Brain – “Split Personalities”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Grim Deeds is a pretty constant presence in the pop-punk community, delivering great song after great song with astounding consistency.  On Split Personalities, he offers up 5 previously released (and previously reviewed) songs to a fun split.  Those songs hit right time and again.  Whether you’re wanting angry or frustrated therapeutic rants (“As Fucking Usual”, “Greeting Cards”) or clever and funny tales (“Shit For Brains”, “Stoned To Oblivion”), Deeds keeps things moving with a buzz and pop that catches on quick.  He even has a galloping instrumental, “Spaghetti Head”, that sounds like something from a punk rock video game soundtrack.

The other band on this 10-song split, Noodle Brain, is a Chicago-based Ramonescore pop punk band that fits right in.  One of their 5 Split Personalities offerings was previously released, a solid mid-tempo pop cover of Groovie Goolies “Save Your Good Lovin’ For Me”.  The others rip.  The melodic lead guitar on the instrumental title track is an earworm and the guitar riff on “Asshole” frames a fun melodic singalong.  “Crushed” is a sweet I-miss-you type song with a terrific vocal hook on the chorus and “I’ve Had Enough Of You” is the anti-”Crushed”, shorter and dismissive, but catchy.
