First Impressions Review: Grimetime – “Do What You Want”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Something To Do Records, 15 Mar 2023

Another month, another Something To Do Music for Something To Do People release – volume 34 this time.  Grimetime does a song called “Do What You Want” – at first glance, I was thinking maybe we had a Bad Religion cover on our hands – but alas, it is an original – and that’s a-okay.

For those unfamiliar with Grimetime, the band is a great pop punk band that doesn’t do anything to reinvent the genre.  Instead, like most of my favorite pop punk bands, Grimetime just writes simple good songs.  “Do What You Want” is another one of those.  The guitars are straightforward, playing earworm chord changes that buzz while the rhythm section stays simple, with a relentless propulsion forward.  But the real star is the soaring vocal melody during the chorus.  The “do what you waaaaaaant” refrain shoots for the skies and hits the target.  It’s a super memorable hook that has real staying power.  I’ve liked lots of Grimetime stuff, but this one hits a little harder on first listen.  I think this one will end up a favorite.
