First Impressions Review: Grivethead – “Sworn to Secrecy” and “Midnight Sunrise”

Self-released, 01 Jul 2023

New York synthwave artist Grivethead has released two brand new singles, each apparently a standalone single with no particular info on a full-album release or EP.  Both are available for purchase individually over at the Grivethead Bandcamp link below.

“Sworn to Secrecy” is a vocalless song that takes me back to playing video games in the 80s or 90s – kinda like I’m walking the streets on “Double Dragon” or something.  It goes along at a slow-to-mid tempo for over 5 minutes, which is admittedly a struggle for my attention span, but throws enough changes into the mix to keep me interested. There’s a particular synth line that repeats throughout that is unnervingly familiar and a real earworm.  The second one, “Midnight Sunrise”, is another instrumental that has that similar 80s or 90s video game vibe, matching the fantastic cover art.  Think music for “Out Run” or “Rad Racing”, maybe.  It’s a little quicker paced and the synth hooks on this one feel a little brighter and are really sticking with me.  I don’t normally listen to a lot of this style of music, though whenever I hear it, the nostalgia part of me tends to enjoy it.  And both of these songs did the trick – I’d dare say better than most.  I think I’m gonna keep Grivethead on my radar to see what else comes from this brain.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
