First Impressions Review: Hot Chicks – “Legalize It”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Urticaria Records, 09 Nov 2022

A little late to this party, Hot Chicks Legalize It has been around since November.  Buuut, having just checked it out now, I realized I needed to do a write up for it.  The band has members of other bands including Exwhite, Eazy, and Lassie (I’m a fan).

Legalize It is a 7-song EP that is rambunctious and infectious garage punk with mostly nonchalant vocals sung and chanted.  The rhythms are persistent and the guitars and synths repeat just the right number of times to stick around afterwards.  Highlights include guitar parts on “Ariel” that remind me of “Space Ghost Coast To Coast” and synth lines and bleeps on “Bedbugs”, “Queens Of The Night”, and closer “Misfortune Day” that worm into my brain.  My favorite is probably the insidious guitar riff and jumpy synths on the third song, “Sweater”.  That one’s also got some terrific shouted vocals that shoot through the din.  “Diggin’ It” has a repetitive synth that reminds me of the music from the SNL digital short “People Getting Punched Right Before Eating”.  The whole EP is a blast.  Sorry to be late to this one, but you should probably check it out so you don’t keep repeating my mistake.
