First Impressions Review: Houseghost – “Violet”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Rad Girlfriend Records, 16 Nov 2022

Haunting pop punks Houseghost have already announced a new album, called Another Realm, set for release in January via Rad Girlfriend.  That one follows up the terrific self-titled effort from a couple years back and has already spawned the lead single “Born on Halloween” (aptly released on Halloween).  Now, the band has delivered a second single, a song called “Violet”.

“Violet” opens with a cool chord progression before quieting the guitars and letting the bass rattle for the lead verse.  The vocals sing a nice melody, especially on the repeated “anywhere, anywhere, anywhere out of this world” chorus that keeps sticking well after the song finishes.  The recording is really good, with a full sound and some dynamics and the lead guitar after the first chorus run-through is a bit reverbed and spot-on for the song.  Even the rhythmic stomp after the lead guitar bridge works.  This has me excited for the full-length.
