First Impressions Review: Jade Hairpins – “Life In England”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Merge Records, 10 Nov 2022

I like Fucked Up’s rugged hardcore shots and their varied experiments that take the foundations to new places.  However, I admittedly don’t know much of Jade Hairpins (featuring Fucked Up’s Jonah Falco and Mike Haliechuk).  I’ve heard the name previously, but this is the first I’ve heard of their music.

“Life In England” is a glorious blast of pop goodness.  The vocal hooks sound like they’re shouting to the heavens and the backing vocals are gorgeous.  Couple with that a boisterous energy coming from the bright guitars and driving bass and we’ve got a power pop nugget.  For real, this song just sounds like the band is having fun and I’m here for it.  Some might knock it a touch for pretty pristine production/gloss, but not me (and this coming from someone who frequently prefers raw and lofi recordings).  Oh, and it’s done in under 2 minutes, perfect for my short attention span. Apparently, they previously released Harmony Avenue in 2020.  I think I’m gonna have to backtrack a bit and check that one out now.
