First Impressions Review: Jeff Rosenstock – “LIKED U BETTER”

Polyvinyl Records, 23 May 2023

Jeff Rosenstock is back with his first new music since 2020’s No Dream.  This time it’s a song called “LIKED U BETTER” and it appears to be a standalone single with digital purchase options at the link below.  There’s also a new video that comes with the song.  You can check that out below, as well.

Opening with an strummed acoustic shuffle, the song kicks into bouncy pop punk territory that is endearing with the stuttered guitars that make up the verses.  But that chorus is where it’s at.  The “I liked you better when you weren’t on my mind” refrain has melodic hooks that feel so good to sing along to.  The lead guitar on the bridge is awesome and the break into a quieter keys(?)-led moment for all of two lines makes for a nice reset before one last run through of the chorus.  Rosenstock’s stuff has really sunk in for me in the past couple of years and “Liked U Better” is no different.  It’s absolutely infectious.

  • Song Comes From: appears to be standalone

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
