First Impressions Review: Jerks! – “Nowhere”

Skippy Gordon Records, 06 Jun 2023

West Virginia’s Jerks! (not to be confused with Nevada’s Jerk!) have a new album on the way called This Is Fun?.  Back in May, they dropped the lead single “Taillights” and now they’re back with more.  This Is Fun? is available for pre-save and pre-order at the links below.

The new one is called “Nowhere” and it’s a pretty catchy pop punk number.  The song has bright melodic guitars (and lead accents over the rhythm throughout) with a persistent mid-tempo kick that keeps moving along.  The lead guitar gets showy on a late-arriving bridge, but sounds pretty cool over top.  And the vocals work – they are melodic and a solo lead vocal will take on a line and then be joined with a harmonizing backing vocal on the next.  It’s certainly a modern pop punk number, and it works pretty well.  That all said, the song is fairly polished for my typical tastes and could’ve maybe closed out when the song went silent for a couple seconds at the 2:27 mark (ya know, on account of my limited attention span).  But those are personal problems.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
