First Impressions Review: Jobber – “Summerslam”

Self-released – 03 Aug 2023

Brooklyn alternative/grunge band Jobber have released another wrestling-infatuated song.  This one’s called “Summerslam” and it follows Oct 2022’s Hell in a Cell EP.  “Summerslam” can be purchased over at Bandcamp (use the link below).

As for the song, it opens oozing a real 90s thing.  Plodding, stomping drums play along with a sludgy, heavy riff, some discordant feedback, and rattling bass.  The music gets peeled back to something quieter as Kate Meizner’s vocals come in, sung ominously before a mimicking guitar/vocal melody pairing sticks the landing.  Then the song gets big and the guitars open into a buzzsaw sound, with a simple yet melodic guitar figure that works right.  Pretty much sticking to this cacophonous, heavy sound for the rest of the song, it’s striking how melodic and nostalgia-inducing it gets during the final minute.  My attention span tells me 5:02 is a long haul, but I didn’t end up losing interest over the course of the song.  Fans of the 90s revival stuff or actual 90s bands like Veruca Salt will likely latch onto this one.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
