First Impressions Review: Landowner – “Witch Museum”

Born Yesterday Records, 18 May 2023

Massachusetts has a new-to-me (though not actually new) band called that has my attention.  The song that got it is called “Witch Museum” and it comes from an upcoming album called Escape the Compound, which arrives 21 Jul 2023 via Born Yesterday.  This one follows up 2021’s Impressive Almanac – a 15 song album that I’m gonna have to go back and check out after falling victim to the ways of “Witch Museum”.

“Witch Museum” is a nervy post-punk song, complete with a no-frills drum beat, repetitive mind-bending bass lines, and insistent guitar figures played on repeat and burrowing into my innermost recesses.  The touchstones are common, I suppose.  There’s a Fall-feel to the ranted vocals, maybe a little Minutemen in there, too.  Some Parquet Courts show up in the anxious-to-the-core delivery, as well – probably the most spot-on reference.  Nothing gets overcooked and the sound is clean and pretty much distortion-free and though the song goes on for 3:31, the repetition doesn’t bore me, it just mesmerizes me.  This one works.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
