First Impressions Review: Lesser Creatures – “No Regular Guy”

Wellsville Records, 09 Apr 2023

I’m a rather ridiculous Lesser Creatures fan.  After first hearing some fantastic songs on a split with the wonderful Grim Deeds, I’ve followed up on every song and album released under the moniker since.  None have disappointed and all have been gems to my ears.  Now, a new single has arrived via Wellsville Records (formerly Ramonescore Radio Records) and it’s a fun one.

“No Regular Guy” jumps outta the blocks with a fantastic guitar lead overtop a rampaging punk pace that eschews any hint of subtlety as singer Nick Spoon’s guttural and ravaged vocal bark sings a memorable vocal melody about wanting to break free from the expectations of a 9-to-5 existence.  The lead guitar keeps coming back for more and the bass plays nice with little variations that give the song some depth.  It’s also worth making a special mention of the drums.  They do a relentless caveman pound throughout and the cymbals sound really good.  Most importantly, though, the song is simply a good one.  Recommended.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
