First Impressions Review: Melonball – “Sicker”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

German skatepunks have a new video available.  “Sicker” comes from the upcoming release and Melonball debut Breathe, which arrives 31 Mar 2023.  The song is the 4th single from the album, joining “Fast Forward”, “Sinking”, and “Whatever”, which are all available from Bandcamp.

The “Sicker” video takes a moment to get going, but when it does, it comes hard.  The song cuts out with some really cool lead guitar and a breakneck pace.  The music is solid and played with a good ferocity that is really needed on a song like this.  But the real winner is the vocal parts.  The lead vocals sound great, keeping melodic and angsty throughout and the backing vocals that are all over the song provide accents and depth in a lot of right ways.  I’m pretty hit and miss on skatepunk, loving some and finding others forgettable.  But I was surprised at how this song stuck with me for a while after listening.  Fans of never-let-up melodic punk rock will likely find something to like here.
