First Impressions Review: Melvinator – “American Errorist”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Fat Wreck Chords / Bottles To The Ground, 09 Dec 2022

Melvinator is the new project from NOFX’s Eric Melvin and Fat Mike and is one of the first signings to Fat Mike’s new label Bottles To The Ground.  The song comes from a 2-song 12” that just dropped, featuring the song and a ZBA remix.  Whatever you might think you’re getting into with this, check those expectations at the door.

Beyond the punny title, “American Errorist” resembles pretty much nothing of NOFX (edit: the song is a take on the NOFX song from War On Errorism). It’s a weird aggressive song that digs into electro effects, banging and skittering electronic percussion, jagged guitars, and screamed spare vocals. The Fat Wreck site pegs it as a crossroads between punk rock and EDM. Maybe, and I truthfully appreciate the “outside-the-box”-ishness from musicians so rooted in a distinct sound. That said, I can’t quite put my finger on where they’re coming from on this – maybe some Chemical Brothers or The Prodigy influences. And I think I hear some Lard in this one, too. But it maybe most reminds me of the song “After The Flesh” by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (I think the only song I know by that band). This isn’t quite where I’m at right now, but this is an interesting detour and if “Flesh” or the other bands are your sort of thing, then this is worth giving a listen.
