Guadalajara’s Mess have been making quite a splash in the oi/street punk world lately, especially following their 2022 split with The Chisel. The notoriety is not without reason. Over the course of several releases, the band has displayed a solid grasp on terrific punk rock that is raw, tough, and memorable. Now, with their upcoming debut full-length Under Attack on the way, the band has dropped two songs to feed the fire.
The first of the songs, “Burn ‘Em”, has a catch-all guitar riff that embeds in my brain pretty right. Paired with barked vocals and a memorable chorus melody that brings in some great backing vocals and you’ve got a buzzsaw winner. It’s simple, it’s spartan, and it sounds fantastic. The follow up, “In The City”, opens with some terrific lead guitar before the full band comes in at a mid-tempo jaunt. For some reason, the rhythm and lead guitar melodic pairing feels like some sort of cinematic moment to me. Not sure why, but maybe I could hear it playing over a scene in “SLC Punk” or something. Anyway, the whole thing is catchy in a weird way with the graveled vocals hacking out some sort of melody. It refuses to get caught up in any sort of tough-guy posturing and ends up being a memorable blast.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
