Metric Fuckton is a new band from Dayton, Ohio that seems to love a lot of the same music I do. Metric Fuckton, the new 5-song EP, features 3 original songs, a cover of The Riverdales “Diabolik”, and a second go at the lead song “In My Dreams”, this one featuring help from none other than Joe Queer on vocals. Having released last week, the album is available at the Bandcamp link below.
Opener “In My Dreams” has a really familiar vocal melody during the verse – I think it’s “99 Luftballons”, maybe. And when the chorus shifts on the chorus, I was totally blindsided. It is a surprising melodic change-up that gets my attention and really works well and the backing vocals sound really cool. Good stuff. “Weez” goes back-and-forth between mid-tempo pacing and rapid fire sprints, and the guitars and bass sound good the whole time. I especially like the instrumental bridge during the second half and the chorus has a great vocal hook with some nice “whoa-oh” backing vocals. “Diabolik” is a straight-faced take on the Riverdales song, but it’s a great song and it’s done well. “2-Liter!” opens with a repeating guitar line that sounds ominous overtop slower stomping drums and crashes before moving into faster territory. The song is okay (cool energy), but it goes on a bit long for my tastes and it sounds a bit outta place next to the other 4 songs on the album – a decided turn from the more Ramones/Riverdales stylings everywhere else. The closer, the redo of “In My Dreams”, sounds as good as the original and the addition of Joe Queer’s vocals in parts works wonderfully. All-in-all, Metric Fuckton is a cool EP, worth giving a listen for fans of catchy melodic Ramones-inspired punk rock.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
