First Impressions Review: Miniature American Flags – “Double Single”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Bloated Kat Records, 20 Jan 2023

New UK band features members of Don Blake and The Kimberly Steaks, both bands I’ve given a bit of time too over the past couple of years.  This new release is a 2-song single, available from Bandcamp (link below).

The lead song, “Tire Me Out”, is a blast.  The song digs into a great pop punk hook on the “you tire me out, you tire me out, you tire me out” chorus and when the verse cuts out the guitars and gives space to the bass late in the song, I pretty much know I’ll be back for more.  For comparisons sake, the song reminds me of something from Teenage Bottlerocket.  The second song, “Rear View”, leads with the repetitively hooking chorus (and even a fantastic “whoa-oh-oh-aye”), only cutting to the verse for a couple lines at a time, then back to that ridiculous catchy “got you in the rear view” part.  The bass is even given a moment to shine and they toss in a key change near the end that works real right.  This came outta nowhere for me and it’s gonna get a lot of listens going forward.
