First Impressions Review: NOFX – “Punk Rock Cliché”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Fat Wreck Chords, 02 Nov 2022

Like many I know, I came into NOFX way back when albums like Ribbed, White Trash, and So Long were coming along.  The albums from that era landed right with me nearly every time.  But as much as I listened to that run, sometime after Pump Up the Valuum I sorta checked out.  I don’t even have an opinion on albums like Coaster or Wolves or First Ditch because I never heard enough of them to form one.  All that said, NOFX are apparently calling it quits, and, from my understanding, going out with Double Album, which arrives 02 Dec 2022.

“Punk Rock Cliché” is the second single from Double Album.  Opening with a stuttered drum rhythm and some muted guitar stabs before taking off on the chorus and going back and forth again.  It’s a little weird, but Fat Mike sounds in good form vocally and the music itself is played well with the guitars engaging, the bass melodic, and the drums uncluttered and bouncing with some pep.  By the time the song wraps (3+ minutes in), I actually find myself going to re-listen.  It doesn’t have the reckless nonsense fun feel of the stuff I grew up listening to, but I actually like this song a bunch.  If the rest of the album hits me like this song, I’ll be happy (and maybe going back to some of the albums I missed over time to catch up).
