Norcos Y Horchata, a ramshackle “street punk” band from Detroit, are a current favorite of mine. Their debut full-length, Forever Disheveled, was absolutely fantastic to these ears. It had some great stories to go along with some rough-and-tumble punk rock and roll music that seemed to merge a little Replacements-style rock and roll with great power pop hooks and street punk-style gang vocals. On their new EP, Aloha Motherfuckers, the band does more of the same.
The lead song and title track runs with a quick pace and one of my favorite basslines of the year. At the start of each verse, the music all drops away except the drums and vocals and it’s pulled off really well. And the guitars are bright throughout with a lead turn during the bridge that fits in nicely. The second song, “Everyone’s an Expert” goes along at a similar tempo to “Aloha Motherfuckers” and has some endearing “ooh’s” going through the background. And then there’s the amusing closer “I Gave Up Drinking For Good (Now I’m Drinking For Evil)”, which falls over itself with some great chord progressions and some gang-style vocals that work oh so well. 3 songs, not a skipper in the bunch. Check it out.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
