First Impressions Review: NOT – “Settle Down”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may get a full review on their own.

Wiretap / Brassneck / Waterslide Records, 17 Mar 2023

Another week goes by, inching closer and closer to the release of Stop The World, the debut album by NOT.  With each successive single, the anticipation mounts for those looking for earnest, endearing, and energetic music.  Oh, and melodic – super melodic, in fact.  Pre-release songs “Stop the World”, “Anxiety”, and “Alien” have me sold.  Now, with less than a month to go until release, a new song called “Settle Down” has arrived.

“Settle Down” is a mid-tempo number, dripping in melodically bright guitars that play foil to the nostalgia and melancholy in the lead vocals and lyrics.  The arrangement shifts directions from mid-tempo to a slowed and pensive bridge before picking back up during the chorus.  Backing vocals shadow the lead and add a touch of depth and the lead guitar that pops in briefly is simple but well-placed.  This one reminds me a bit of “Without Love” off the most recent Descendents album.  It’s heartfelt pop rock with a buzz.  Again, I don’t know if ALLcore or Descendentscore is a thing, but if you think it might be and like the idea of it, this is for you.
