First Impressions Review: Öldie Häwn – “One and Only”

Something To Do Records, 15 May 2023

Pop punks Öldie Häwn just released Missing Time, a dynamite full-length that dropped in April.  Now, they’re back at it with a contribution to the Something To Do Music For Something To Do People series.  Volume 36 features a song called “One and Only”.  It can be purchased digitally at the link below.

“One and Only” is a mid-tempo pop punk number with a heavy emphasis on the pop element.  There’s a solid forward momentum to the song and the slightly distorted guitars take a nice melodic turn (the lead guitar pops in just right), but the real star comes from the vocals.  The lead vocals dig into my brain, especially with the hook on the chorus, and the backing vocals are sweet and harmonious.  Throughout, the melody has a sort of late-summer nostalgia-meets-melancholy feel and it ends up reminding me quite a lot of something from The Queers Don’t Back Down-era.  It’s good stuff and something I’ll be listening to again and again.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
