First Impressions Review: Öldie Häwn – “Self-Replicating Robots”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Otitis Media Records, 24 Mar 2023

We already reported on Öldie Häwn‘s upcoming new album and reviewed the lead song, “To Agnes – With Love”.  The album’s called Missing Time and will be arriving via Otitis Media Records in April.  Now, the band has delivered a new single, offering up a lyric video for the song “Self-Replicating Robots” (geez, I love that song title!).

“Self-Replicating Robots” opens with a melodic lead guitar and slow rolling drums before popping off into a quick-paced pop punk number, complete with stuttered rhythmic hooks, just-short-of-snotty lead vocals, and gorgeous harmonizing backing vocals.  The coda goes with a lead vocal singing “on a mission to belong” while backing vocals respond with a “we all, we all belong”.  It’s a nice sentiment that connects the sci-fi robot theme to real aspirations for ourselves and those around us.  Though I was surprised by the rolling intro, “Self-Replicating Robots” ended up landing lots of pop and goodness.  Recommended.
