First Impressions Review: OUTTACONTROLLER – “Less Is More”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Self-released, 27 Feb 2023

Nova Scotia power pop punks have a new song available called “Less Is More”.  The song is the first new stuff from the band since 2022’s Come Alive album.  The new one can be picked up (along with Come Alive and lots of other music) at the Bandcamp link below.

“Less Is More” opens with a squall of guitars that are really noisy before moving into a raw power pop/pop punk bounce.  The song is mid-tempo on the verses with a pretty infectious guitar chord progression and some slightly-ravaged lead vocals singing melodically.  Near the end of each verse run-through, the drums memorably go double time into a chorus that wraps with a revisit to the opening squall and a bridge that tosses on a nice lead guitar eventually giving way to a basic bass line and simple drum stomp to do the bidding for a moment.  Then, during the last of the song, the drums go double time again for one more chorus go-round.  Ultimately, “Less Is More” is an infectious song.  The recording is charmingly raw, the song is full of fun energy, and the melodies are sticking in my brain pretty well.  You should check this one out.
