First Impressions Review: Poppy Robbie – “Twist and Pout”

Something To Do Records, 15 Apr 2023

Another month, another entry into the “Something To Do Music for Something To Do People” series.  Number 35 comes from Poppy Robbie and features a song called “Twist and Pout”.  Purchase options are available over at Bandcamp (link below).

The song is a stripped-down shuffle with some tamed acoustic guitar strummed at a lackadaisical pace and it kinda reminds me of the sort of tossed-off gem that the Replacements would drop every now and then.  But the song has hooks and some snarky attitude.  The vocal melody is positively an earworm – digging in deep and staying memorable – and the vocals are excellently executed as he sings about the “too-cool-to-enjoy-the-show” set at concerts – it’s actually pretty funny.  Anytime I hear a stripped down song like this, I think of the courage it takes to lay vocals bare without much of anything to mask any inadequacies or slip-ups.  But Poppy Robbie does it on this one and nary a slip is to be found.  It’s not my normal listening, but this is a good one.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
