First Impressions Review: Powder Horns – “Unlovers”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Dem Daisies Records, 04 Jan 2023

North Carolina’s Powder Horns have a new album on the way.  Unlovers comes 10 Mar 2023 via Dem Daisies Records, following up March’s Powder Horns LP.  Ahead of the release is a lead single and video.  The song is the title track and it’s a pretty raucous and heavy song.

To the uninitiated, Powder Horn’s music is a heavy sort of garage grunge rock, reminding me a bit of the riff-heavy side of Sub Pop.  “Unlovers” has a tough riff that drills into one’s brain, alternately chugging and ripping as the song persistently stomps along.  The vocals fit pretty well, slightly higher and cleaner in the mix than I was expecting, but pretty effective nonetheless.  As an entire song, it’s not as gritty or as scuzzy as Mudhoney and their brethren, which is my typical standard for music like this, but it’s a decent earworm of a song.  Fans of some of the newer grunge bands might find something to like here.
