First Impressions Review: Raised on TV – “Mr. Blue”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

LA pop-rock band Raised on TV have a new single available.  “Mr. Blue” just arrived and can be purchased digitally over at Bandcamp.  The song is the first from the band since the 2-song Around The Sun EP dropped last August.  Knowing nothing of the band, the band name itself drew me to the melancholy light.

“Mr. Blue” has a jittery guitar riff that plays a melodic figure during the opening verse before going persistent with its rhythm on the chorus.  It’s on this part that the song gets a little more shimmering, sounding like it’s going to the skies.  The lead vocals throughout carry an okay melody that is on the verge of memorable for me.  And the whole thing is bathed in reverb and gauze, giving off what seems to be a clear intention of a hazy memories mood and nostalgia.  In fact, I’d say the album cover matches the music about as well as could be.  This isn’t the type of song I listen to much, and I likely won’t be coming back to this one frequently.  But if you like the sort of song that revels in atmosphere and shimmer, this one might be worth checking out.
