First Impressions Review: Rancid – “Devil In Disguise”

Epitaph Records, 24 May 2023

So Rancid’s peaking my interest.  Having announced Tomorrow Never Comes, the band is back with their first album in 6 years set to arrive in early June via Epitaph with pre-orders and pre-saves at the link below.  Having already released two really good songs, the title track that I reviewed here and the even better “Don’t Make Me Do It” that I reviewed here, the band has a new single and video that keeps up the hot streak.

“Devil In Disguise” is a paranoid rampaging singalong like Rancid does so well.  It all opens with a simple growling vocal before the song busts loose.  The song works off raw guitars and melodic bass and the drums sorta gallop throughout, reminding me of something from the Wolves-era (a little different from the 2000-feel to “Don’t Make Me Do It”).  Armstrong’s vocals backed on the chorus coupled with the back-and-forth, call-and-response vocals during the verse are making me go back for more listens.  And that bridge is positively nailed.  Again, the production is pretty spot-on, raw and fierce and full of a kinetic energy that the best Rancid songs always pull off.  Things are looking up for Tomorrow Never Comes.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
