First Impressions Review: Rancid – “Don’t Make Me Do It”

Epitaph Records, 02 May 2023

Rancid just recently announced a new album.  Called Tomorrow Never Comes, the album is set to arrive in early June via Epitaph with pre-orders and pre-saves at the link below.  Having already released a really good song, the title track that I reviewed here, the band has now delivered a new song and video and they’re keeping my hopes high.

“Don’t Make Me Do It” is another rambunctious number loaded with good time Rancid energy.  This one sticks to the high-octane street punk vibe, again leaving out any trace of ska or subtlety.  After a couple of big chords, the band rips into a banger that rips at a breakneck pace.  The guitars cut like buzzsaws, the bass stays busy keeping up, and the drums are pummeling in their insistent drive.  Armstrong’s lead vocals again sound re-energized, full of spit and vigor, and the back and forth “don’t make me do it” lines really stick.  Even though this one doesn’t ooze melody, the exhilaration of it all gets me by.  Two in and I’m really liking what I hear – reminds me of the full body shots that came from the rampaging Rancid (2000) album.  That’s pretty hallowed territory for me, but so far this stuff is giving me hope.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
