First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Shonen Knife is back! I love Shonen Knife, so I’m greatly excited to learn this. The new album, Our Best Place, arrives soon (15 Feb 2023) via Good Charamel Records and can be pre-ordered at the link below. This is the first new album from the band since 2019’s Sweet Candy Power.
Ahead of the new album, the band has delivered the single “MUJINTO Rock”. Having fallen for the rather shambolic early stuff from the band, I’m still often amazed by the comparative sound and evolution of the band. “MUJINTO Rock” is pretty simple punk rock, keeping a quick pace and melodic guitars. The vocals really carry the song, becoming pretty instantly hummable by part-way through the first chorus. Lead guitar pops into frame on the choruses, simple but incredibly effective. And the bridges effectively shift the song just enough to keep the 4+ minute runtime from becoming too much. I like this a lot. Oh, and check out the stop-motion video below. It’s goofy fun, too.
