Okay, I’m pretty late to this, but it’s Canadian pop punk band Steve Adamyk Band and they’re pretty great, so now you’re gonna hear about ’em. They happen to be the newest band to take on the Drunk Dial series. #11 in the series features the band doing 2 songs, both covers. The first is a cover of The Kids “Do You Wanna Know” and the second is a cover of Sedatives “Slip Away”. You can pick up the 7-inch or a digital copy at the Bandcamp link below.
I’m a big fan of the Steve Adamyk Band. Their songs are hook-laden pop punk gems that sound blasted from the neighbors garage. “Do You Wanna Know” is a lot like the original. Maybe a touch faster, the hooks are all in place and the vocal back-and-forth works wonderfully with the whole band hitting its stride. The song is right in the band’s wheelhouse, too – if this was a Steve Adamyk original, it’d fit really nicely into their catalog. “Slip Away” is a bit of garage-meets-street punk, and thus a touch outside the power pop punk sweet spot that Adamyk typically hits. But the song has hooks. And Adamyk’s version hits the hooks and the borrowed organ helps the song feel like a highly-caffeinated Nuggets song. Again, the back-and-forth vocals are excellent and the bass adds a few nice melodic touches. Unsurprisingly, both songs are really good. Highly recommended.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
