First Impressions Review: Taxi Girls – “Sunshine”

Wild Honey Records / Dirt Cult Records, 03 May 2023

Montreal’s Taxi Girls have a debut EP on the way.  Coming Up Roses is set to arrive via Wild Honey Records (vinyl) and Dirt Cult Records (cassette) on 07 Jul with digital pre-orders available over at Bandcamp (see link below).  The three-piece plays high-energy punk rock that blends some Ramones and some Muffs (sans the guttural howls and screams).

The lead single from the album, a number called “Sunshine”, hits all the right buttons.  It’s got buzzing guitars, a super-melodic bass line, and simple-perfect double-tap drums and crashes all set to a relentless pace with no wasted moment.  The lead vocals are hooky as all-get-out and leave me wanting to sing along pretty much from the jump and when the backing vocals join in the fun ratchets up.  Even the distorto-bridge works in its brevity.  There’s nothing “revolutionary” or “new” here, but it’s a drop dead awesome song.  Full recommendation.

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.
