First Impressions Review: The Battlebeats – “Get Lost”

First Impressions are whiz-bang reviews of singles, 7″s, EPs, and LPs which are given a review after a single listen. This is a great way for TGEFM to showcase some of the releases which may not get a full review on their own.

Indonesia has a pretty fantastic punk thing going recently.  Bands like Saturday Night Karaoke and Fatrace have been absolutely killing it with infectious pop punk goodness.  Coming from Bandung, Indonesia’s “slum king of garage rock” The Battlebeats play punk raw, with a budget-friendly lo-fi sound and a pent-up frustration that sets them apart from the aforementioned peers.

Get Lost is the new 4-song EP from the band, and it hits hard.  The opening title track sets the tone with a blistering pace, manic vocals, an infectiously snake-like bassline, and even a hint of tambourines.  Follow-up “Make Me Sick” dials the speed back a touch but works in a nice vocal melody on the bridge leading into the chorus.  “Brainsick” has one of my favorite things, the double-tap snare hits that make a song really bounce.  The guitars chug and then lead like nobody’s business and it’s instantly danceable.  Closer “I Don’t Like You” has a mean cool guitar riff on the chorus and muted guitars that are bound to sneak into my brain after another listen or two while the drums stomp along at a deliberate mid-tempo.  Throughout, the vocals cut through a cheap mic sound to fit right into the primal sounds of the recording.  I like this a lot.
